A Small Sign, A Big Lesson in Walkability

30 August 2026

Last week, I had the privilege of being at Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad for a corporate faculty assignment, along with Jaspreet Bindra.

And beyond the classroom interactions, one small thing on the campus particularly caught my attention.

It was this little sign on campus:

LEFT LANE DRIVING
RIGHT LANE WALKING

It meant that across the campus, people could comfortably use the roads for walking, while vehicles had their clearly understood space.

Such a small intervention. But it made the campus feel noticeably more walkable.

As cities get busier, walking is often what gets squeezed out first. Footpaths get encroached upon, become difficult to navigate, or simply aren’t wide enough.

And slowly, something as basic as walking becomes an activity that requires effort rather than something we naturally do.

Felt great to experience walkers getting the same space as cars on campus.
