ChatGPT Chat Mode vs Work Mode

ChatGPT introduced Work mode recently, without saying a whole lot about it. (A typical behaviour of modern AI companies—release stuff without much usage guidance!)
Most users have fairly basic questions:
What exactly is different? And when should I use Chat mode vs Work mode?
My attempt to answer this is as follows:
Chat mode can already search the web, work with files, use connected apps and do fairly complex tasks. So Work mode isn’t simply about giving ChatGPT access to more tools.
The more useful way to understand the difference is in how the two modes work.

In Chat mode, the basic loop is conversational.
You ask something → ChatGPT responds → you review → ask the next question → it responds again.
Even when ChatGPT uses tools along the way, you are largely driving the sequence, one interaction at a time. -
Work mode is designed to change the operating model.
You give ChatGPT a goal, along with the relevant context and inputs. It can then work through the task across multiple steps: planning what needs to be done, using tools where required, checking its work, adapting, and continuing until it has an output for you to review.
So, a simple way I have started thinking about it:
- Chat mode: You drive the steps.
- Work mode: You set the goal. AI drives more of the steps. You review the output.
For example, if I want to understand the EV market in India, explore a few trends, ask questions and follow my curiosity, I would probably use Chat.
If my goal is to research the EV market, analyse competitors, study pricing and policy, and turn all of that into a structured executive report, Work is probably the better starting point.
Of course, the boundary isn’t absolute. You can do substantial work in Chat too.
The difference is really about how much you want to stay inside the process versus how much of the process you want to delegate.
In summary:
Chat is the conversational interface to ChatGPT.
Work is the more agentic interface to ChatGPT.
