Brilliant Is Not Enough. AI Must Be Available.
3 August 2026
In most of our customer engagements, at some point, this question gets asked: which AI is actually better, Claude or ChatGPT?
This post isn’t trying to settle that whole debate, because reasoning ability, coding chops, pricing, personality, all of that deserves its own separate conversation and honestly depends on what you are using it for.
What I want to sit with here is just one factor, but a big one, the kind that quietly decides whether a tool becomes part of your daily workflow or something you keep opening a second tab for, just in case: can you actually reach it when you need it?
So instead of going with impressions or the usual anecdotes we all carry around, we pulled the actual incident history from StatusGator, an independent outage monitor that tracks both companies’ status pages using the same up, warn, and down classification for everyone it watches.
Over roughly the last two months, Claude was flagged in a critical “down” state 26 separate times, adding up to close to 60 hours of confirmed downtime. ChatGPT, over that same stretch, was flagged “down” exactly once, for 29 minutes.
That’s not a small gap you can explain away with rounding, that’s two different reliability categories entirely.
What was the shape and severity of these incidents?
It tells its own story, maybe even more than the count does.
- When ChatGPT breaks, it’s almost always something StatusGator tags as “minor,” and it tends to stay boxed into one corner of the product: image generation goes down, or Codex acts up, or enterprise login throws errors, while the core chat experience keeps working underneath it.
- When Claude breaks, several of the incidents were tagged “major,” and they didn’t stay in a corner. They took out the web app, the API, Claude Code, and Cowork all at once.
July 29th is a good example. For about two and a half hours, Claude’s servers couldn’t keep up with the volume of requests coming in. So instead of getting an answer, users everywhere just got an error message saying the system was overloaded.
And this happened at the same time across every way people access Claude: the website, the API that other apps plug into, Claude Code, and Cowork. So it wasn’t one product having a bad day, it was the whole thing going down together, all at once.
So when someone asks me which one is better, I have started answering with a second layer added on, because brilliant and available are not the same thing, and a model that’s slightly less sharp but is simply there every single time will beat a model that’s more capable but unreachable exactly when your team needed to ship.
