The Hidden Cost of AI: Cognitive Debt

9 July 2026

The world around us is changing. The work that we had known is not what it used to be.

Like every major shift, this one brings both opportunities and risks. AI promises to help us work faster, automate more. But it is also changing what we need to become good at.

Earlier this week, I wrote about what Satya Nadella calls cognitive coverage. He says:

“My ability to deductively understand what an agent did is probably one of the more important human skills we have to develop.”

As agents get better at doing, humans need to get better at understanding.

The real risk isn’t just that AI will think for us. It’s that we gradually accumulate cognitive debt—becoming increasingly dependent on outputs we no longer fully understand. Like financial debt, cognitive debt compounds quietly. You don’t notice it day to day, until one day you realise your ability to reason, challenge, and exercise judgment has weakened.

I hope you get the sarcasm in this little cartoon.
